In 2023, Shell recorded operational spills of some 370 metric tons, compared with 1,400 metric tons spilled due to sabotage. This was an increase compared to the previous year, which has seen the lowest annual volume spilled. The company indicates that a majority of its sabotage spills were related to its operations in Nigeria. In 2008 and 2009, equipment failure and criminal activity resulted in the company's most significant oil spills, when around 30,000 metric tons of oil flooded the Niger Delta swamps.
