Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is the state of an HIV infection when a person's CD4 cell count is below 200 cells per microliter of blood. A diagnosis of AIDS means that a person's immune system is incredibly weakened by HIV and they are no longer able to effectively fight off infections. In 2020, in the State of New York approximately 53 percent of new AIDS diagnoses were among those that had acquired HIV through male-to-male sexual contact.
