Methane emissions in India 2022, by sector
The agriculture sector is the largest source of methane emissions in India, by far. In 2022, agricultural processes, such as enteric fermentation and manure management, released 20.1 million metric tons of methane into the atmosphere. This accounted for more than 60 percent of India's methane emissions that year. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential roughly 30 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
