Work from home in Spain 2020-2022, by frequency
From 2020 to 2022, the percentage of workers in a hybrid system has increased from 4.2 percent to 6.3 percent. By contrast, the share of workers who mostly telework has decreased since 2020 and was 7.6 percent in 2022.
For most people, remote work is not yet a reality
From 2014 to 2024, internet penetration in Spain, namely the share of the population with access to the internet, increased from 66.64 percent to nearly 92 percent. Despite this considerable increase, and the fact that, in 2023, 99.1 percent of companies had access to the internet, two-thirds of companies that could offer remote work, but opt not to, do not give a reason, or do not know why they act this way.
The (in)equality of remote work in Spain
In Spain, the incidence of remote work presents gender equality, with both genders having a rate of around 13 percent in 2022. However, in economic terms, it is workers with higher household incomes that have the greatest opportunity to work from home. In 2023, 25 percent of people with a monthly income of 3,000 or more euros worked from home, while only five percent of households with an income of less than 1,600 euros had this option.
