In 2021, the shipment value of low-malt beer (happoshu) in Japan amounted to over 191 billion Japanese yen. While beer is a major segment of the Japanese alcoholic beverage market, happoshu was introduced as a cheaper alternative to the brewed beverage. However, following gradual tax rate adjustments on alcoholic malt-beverages, popularity declined with rising prices.
