Card payment value per million inhabitants in the EU-27 2000-2020, by country
When compared against domestic population, the value of card payments in 2020 in Denmark was over three times higher than in, for example, Germany. Indeed, Europe's largest economy had a relatively low value of payments done by card. On the other hand, countries like Luxembourg, Ireland and Belgium were found relatively high on the list. This is likely caused by either how dependent these countries are on cross-border e-commerce or, in the case of Luxembourg, by people travelling in and out of the country for work.
