Twitter: number of users in India 2013-2022
Where it all started
The first big social networking website in the nation was Orkut, which was owned by Google. The website was on the most visited in 2018, until it was eventually shut down in 2014. But the digital social interaction among Indians continues to flourish. Facebook filled up the void in the online social world created by the absence of Orkut, so much so that the country accounted for the highest number of users of Zuckerberg’s social media platform in 2018. The arrival of Twitter changed the way people stay up to date with the current affairs in the country.
Prolific following
The Indian prime minister Narendra Modi had the most popular Twitter profile in the nation with over 45 million followers in 2019, the only politician who made the list, apart from his PMO account. Other profiles which were most followed on the platform belonged to Bollywood actors and cricketing captain Virat Kohli and sports legend Sachin Tendulkar. The only female who made this list was actress Deepika Padukone.
