Waste sector facilities in the United States reported greenhouse gas emissions of 101 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) across 1,452 facilities in 2022. More than 80 percent of these emissions came from from municipal landfills. Methane is the primary GHG emitted by the waste sector.
