Internally displaced persons in the Sahel 2021, by country
The Sahel is experiencing one of the largest humanitarian crises. Violence, climate change, and food insecurity have forced around three million people to flee. Indeed, this region has about 2.5 million internally displaced people, over 900 thousand refugees and asylum seekers and almost 700 thousand returnees in need of assistance. In August 2021, Burkina Faso counted over 1.4 million internally displaced persons, the highest number among the four countries taken into analysis. By its turn, Chad had some 400 thousand internally displaced persons.
