Data gathered at the end of 2019 showed that for music artists the least lucrative platform in terms of generating an income of around 1,400 U.S. dollars (the minimum wage in the United States) was YouTube, with artists needing over 2.13 million plays in order to earn that amount. The source noted that YouTube's payouts amounted to 0.00069 U.S. dollars per play, whereas Napster paid around 0.01682 dollars per play, meaning that its artists would need less than 80 thousand plays to earn the monthly minimum wage.
