According to a survey for experts on Southeast Asia from the various industries and in academia in Singapore, 65.6 percent of those surveyed said that the proposed revival of the East Asia Economic Caucus (EAEC) is irrelevant, as the EAEC was already superseded by the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The EAEC was a regional free trade zone initially proposed by Malaysia's Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in 1997.
