Independence Day in Mexico is an important national holiday officially celebrated on September 16. Festivities start on the previous eve, when the president of Mexico re-enacts the "Grito de Independencia", an historical event that is considered the beginning of the independence movement. Celebrations include music, fireworks and lots of traditional food. In 2018, 12 percent of participants on a survey were expecting to spend more than 1,500 Mexican pesos for the occasion. However, the majority of the people surveyed, almost 42 percent, planned to spend 500 Mexican pesos or less to celebrate the national holiday.
