After having been surpassed by Netflix for the first time in 2018, HBO was relegated to second place once more at this year’s Emmy nominations. While the pay TV giant saw its nominations slip from a record-breaking 137 in 2019 to a five-year low of 107 this year, Netflix received more nods than ever from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with 160 nominations.
The Emmys are awarded annually by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for excellence in the television industry. They are the most prestigious prize in television, equivalent to what the Academy Awards (Oscars) are to the film industry.
In recent years, streaming services started making their mark at the Emmys, with Netflix earnings its first nominations in 2013. Since then, the streaming giant has earned more nominations each year, with its total number of nods climbing from 14 in 2013 to 160 this year.
